Plastids are double membrane-bound organelles found inside plants and some algae. It is responsible for making and storing food. Many plastids are photosynthetic, but some are not.
The most common plastids include:
The chloroplasts are one of the well-known plastids. These are responsible for photosynthesis.
Chromoplastsare where the pigments are stored and synthesized in the plant. These are found in flowering plants, fruits, and aging leaves.
Gerontoplasts are the chloroplasts that are undergoing aging process. These are chloroplasts of the leaves that convert into different organelles since the leaf is no longer utilizing photosynthesis.
Leucoplasts are the non-pigmented organelles found in the non-photosynthetic parts of the plant, such as the roots. They are used as storage sheds for starches, lipids, and proteins and used for the synthesis amino acids and fatty acids.
