Question

Explain Redox reaction

Open in App
Solution

Redox Reaction

  • The reaction in which oxidation and reduction reactions always occur simultaneously is called an oxidation-reduction reaction.
  • The term 'Redox" is a short form of oxidation-reduction.
  • Example: A reaction between Ferrous oxide with Aluminium

2Al(s)Aluminum+Fe2O3(aq)Ferrousoxide2Fe(s)Iron+Al2O3(aq)AluminumOxide

  • The above reaction is a redox reaction as oxidation and reduction reactions are taking place simultaneously.
  • Fe2O3 is reduced to Fe whereas Al is oxidized to Al2O3.
  • Oxidizing agent: Fe2O3, Reducing agent: Al

Therefore, the Redox reaction is a reaction in which oxidation and reduction both simultaneously occur.
