When light travels from one medium to another medium it bends from its original path while entering the second medium because its speed changes. this change of speed is denoted by a constant called refractive index.
Refractive index is represented by the symbol ‘μ’.
μ = speed of light in medium-1 / speed of light in medium-2
The refractive index of water is 1.3 and the refractive index of glass is 1.5 representing the speed of light is faster in water.
