Question

explain regulation of respiration briefly ?

Open in App
Solution

The respiration rhythm is under control of nervous system. There are three specialised respiratory centres in the brain. These are as follows:
1. Respiratory rhythm centre is located in medulla. It is primarily responsible for respiratory rhythm and sends impulses to primary respiratory muscles, i.e, diaphragm.
2.
Pneumotaxic centre is present in pons and it can moderate the functions of respiratory rhythm centre through neural signals.
3. A chemosensitive area is located adjacent to rhythm centre and it gets activated with an increase in the concentration of CO2 and H+. It sends signals to rhythm centre to make necessary alterations to eliminate these substances. Receptors associated with aortic arch and carotid artery can also sense changes in H+ and CO2 and can send signals to rhythm centre.
