Solution
(a) Ray diagram : - (Ref. image).
(b) Expression for magnifying power: The ratio of the visual angle of image to the visual angle of object, placed at the least distance of distinct vision, is called magnifying power. m=Visual angle of imageVisual angle of object placed at the least distance of distinct vision or m=βα As the angles α and β are small. Therefore, m=tanβtanα ......(i) In ΔAOB, tanβ=ABOB and in ΔA′′OB′, tanα=A′′B′B′O ∴m=AB/OBA′′B′/B′O or m=ABOB×DAB (∵A′′B′=AB and BO=D=Least distance of distinct vision) Or m=DOB By sign convention, D will be negative and OB=−u. ∴m=−D−u Or m=Du .....(i) Where, u is the distance of object from the lens. (i) when the image is formed distinct vision at the least distance of: from lens formula, 1f=1v−1u 1f=1−v−1−u (from sign convention) Or 1f=−1v+1u But v=D= Least distance of distinct vision ∴1f=−1D+1u Or Df=−1+Du Or 1+Df=Du Putting the value in equation (ii) m=1+Df (ii) When the image is formed at infinity: u=f From equation (i) m=Df For greater magnification, focal length should be small.
