Question

Explain some harmful effects of agricultural practices on the environment?

Open in App
Solution

Harmful effects of agricultural practices:

  1. Soil: Fertilizer affects the chemistry of the soil while also killing numerous beneficial bacteria.
  2. Groundwater: Fertilizer always leaches into the soil and eventually reaches groundwater.
It enhances the salinity of the groundwater.
  3. Eutrophication: Fertilizer-sprayed fields runoff enters aquatic bodies.
Eutrophication occurs as a result of this.
  4. Pesticides: Pesticides sprayed on crops make their way into bodies of water, harming the biota. Biomagnification causes persistent chemicals to become very hazardous to higher organisms.
  5. Groundwater: In most regions, continued use of groundwater in agriculture has resulted in a drop in the water table.
  6. Irrigation: It causes soils to get waterlogged and salivate.
  7. Genetic Erosion: The use of only a few high-yielding cultivars has resulted in agricultural plant genetic erosion.
  8. Detriment to the environment: Natural ecosystems and habitats have been harmed as a result of agricultural land removal.
  9. Climate Change: Farming supports monoculture by allowing a small number of species to be produced on a big tract of land. This has an impact on the area's biodiversity.
  10. Deforestation: Forests are still being cut down to make space for agriculture. This resulted in a decrease in habitat for the majority of species.
  11. Soil Degradation: When land is farmed for a long time, the soil becomes inefficient in absorbing all of the nutrients. Soil deterioration occurs as a result of this. In addition, the use of hazardous pesticides and fertilizers causes soil deterioration.
  12. Pollution: Agriculture uses artificial fertilizers and pesticides, which pollute the environment. Soil, water, and air pollution are all caused by these pollutants.
