Question

explain SP hybridization in acetylene molecule

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

In acetylene which is also called ethyne (H-C≡C-H) there is one sigma bond and two pi bonds between the C atoms. Both the C atoms are in sp hybridization. The C-C sigma bond is formed by the head-on overlap of one sp orbitals of each carbon. The remaining sp hybrid orbital of each carbon atom forms a sigma bond with the H atom. The two unhybridized p orbitals of each carbon overlap partially to form two pi bonds between the C atoms.
