Question

Explain sublimation.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Certain solids such as dry ice and camphor possess very weak intermolecular forces of attraction.
  2. On acquiring a sufficient amount of heat, the molecules attain enough kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular attractive forces.
  3. Molecules become free to move around.
  4. This leads to the transition of solid to its gaseous state.

This process is termed sublimation.

The following diagram represents the sublimation of camphor.
