Question

explain the activity of chromatography

Open in App
Solution

Chromatography is a technique used to separate mixtures into its components. In this method, a drop of mixture to be separated is placed on a filter paper, and the paper is hanged in a jar, slightly dipping in the solvent, so that when solvent rises up in the paper (as the filter papers has pores in it which allow the movement of the solvent), it carries the components of the mixture alongwith it. Different substances move at different speeds which allows the mixture to separate in its components.

activity of chromatography:-

Take a thin strip of filterpaper

draw a line on it by using a pencil, approximately 3cm above the lower edge

put a small drop of ink at the center of the line.Let it dry

Lower the filterpaper into a jar containing water so that the drop of ink is just above the water level

Watch carefully as the water rises up on the filterpaper

The component which is more soluble rises faster &produce a colured spot on the filterpaper at a higherlevel/higher portion & less soluble component component rises slower & produce spot at lower height.(the no:of components in the ink =the no:of spots)
