Nickel is heated in a stream of CO to form nickel tetra carbonyl complex which is highly volatile.
$N i + 4 C O 330 - 350 K - ----- \to N i (C O)_{4}$
Nickel tetra carbonyl is heated at high temperature. It decomposes to give pure nickel.
$N i (C O)_{4} 450 - 470 K - ----- \to N i + 4 C O$
