Open in App
Solution

Archimedes' screw:
It is a manually operated screw conveyor used to pump water from a low-lying water body.
It consists of a huge cylinder with an inner screw. The rotation of the rod in the centre rotates the cylinder. It is placed at an inclination of 45 with the horizontal. As the rod is rotated, the water is lifted by the screw-like arrangement.
Archimedes' screw was used to lift water from the dock of a ship.

In modern days, a modified version of the Archimedes' screw called the combine harvester is used to harvest grain crops like paddy, wheat, and barley.
