Question

explain the basic character of oxides down the group in a periodic table

Open in App
Solution

The basic character of the oxides depend on the nature of the central metal ion. More is the electropositive character, more is the basic character of oxide. As the size increases, electropositive character increases.
Hence, the oxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are strongly basic and as we move down the group the basicity increases.
