Explain the basic criteria for classification of permanent tissue of the plant.

Solution

The cells of meristematic tissue divide to a limited extent, and become specialized for a specific function. This process is referred to as differentiation. The cells lose their ability to divide after a successful differentiation, and it results in the formation of permanent tissue. There are two types of permanent tissue; simple permanent tissue and complex permanent tissue.
Simple permanent tissue contains cells that possess the same structure and function. It is mainly of three types-parenchyma, sclerenchyma and collenchyma. Complex permanent tissue consists of different types of cells, but all of them act as a single unit to perform a particular function. It is mainly of two kinds- xylem and phloem.
