Question

Explain the basis of classification of elements in periodic table.

Open in App
Solution

Elements are classified depending on the difference in their chemical properties. Chemical properties of an element depend on the electronic configuration. If the element has 1, 2 or 3 electrons, it behaves like a metal since it has a tendency to lose electrons. If on the other hand it has 4, 5, 6 or 7 electrons, it is considered a non metal as it accepts electrons to attain stability.
On basis of electronic configuration, elements are classified as:
1. s-block metals
2. p-block non-metals
3. d-block transition metals
4. f-block inner transition metals
