Biologists such as Ernst Haeckal and Robert Whittaker and Carl Woese tried to classify all living organisms into broad categories called kingdoms .

These include: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.

Basis for classification :-

• Complexity of cell structure

• Mode and source of nutrition

• body organisation

• Unicellular or multicellular

• presence or absence of cell wall etc.
