Question

Explain the breathing mechanism in Mangroves.

Open in App
Solution

The mangroves are the plants that grow in marshy areas in which the water logging occurs and the air is not available for respiration. The roots cannot perform the anaerobic respiration. Therefore, these plants have special breathing roots called pneumatophores that come out of the soil showing negative geotropism. As these roots are exposed to the atmospheric air, they can take in oxygen and perform respiration.
