- The Cartesian coordinate system represents the two dimensions using two axes - x axis and y axis.
- Each position is represented as a point on a square grid, in which each square has a side of unit length.
- The position of each point is identified using coordinates; each coordinate represents the perpendicular distance of the point from the x axis and the y axis.
- The x-coordinate represents the distance of the point from the y-axis, whereas the y-coordinate represents the distance of the point from the x-axis.
