Solution

  • Kolleru is the largest freshwater lake in India between West Godavari and Krishna districts. In 1999 Government of Andhra Pradesh had declared it as a bird sanctuary as it hosted 193 species of birds. It also inhabits a variety of flora and fauna.

  • But the lake quality degraded due to water pollution. The size of the lake got reduced. The muddy ground in the lake resulted in flooding.

  • Human activities like aquaculture, agricultural and industrial runout adversely affected the lake. As a result of which the water holding capacity of the lake also reduced.

  • The lake became more alkaline, turbid and the BOD of water increased.

  • Several health issues were faced by the local inhabitants. Prawns and fishes were also affected. Vector borne diseases also increased.

  • Therefore, the Ministry of Environment and Finance formed a committee ‘Operation Kolleru’ to protect the lake. The objective of the committee is to bring the lake back to a pollution free environment and to maintain ecological balance.
