Explain the case study of Kolleru lake.
Kolleru is the largest freshwater lake in India between West Godavari and Krishna districts. In 1999 Government of Andhra Pradesh had declared it as a bird sanctuary as it hosted 193 species of birds. It also inhabits a variety of flora and fauna.
But the lake quality degraded due to water pollution. The size of the lake got reduced. The muddy ground in the lake resulted in flooding.
Human activities like aquaculture, agricultural and industrial runout adversely affected the lake. As a result of which the water holding capacity of the lake also reduced.
The lake became more alkaline, turbid and the BOD of water increased.
Several health issues were faced by the local inhabitants. Prawns and fishes were also affected. Vector borne diseases also increased.
Therefore, the Ministry of Environment and Finance formed a committee ‘Operation Kolleru’ to protect the lake. The objective of the committee is to bring the lake back to a pollution free environment and to maintain ecological balance.
