Question

Explain the cause of the inertness of noble gases.

Open in App
Solution

Noble gases:

  1. The elements such as Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), Xenon (Xe) and Radon (Rn) are gases at ordinary temperature.
  2. They are known as inert gases or noble gases.
  3. They do not combine or react with other elements to form compounds.
  4. All noble gases are completed filled outermost shells.
  5. Hence, they are chemically inert.

For example:

  1. The atomic number of helium is 2.
  2. Its electronic configuration is 2.
  3. Its duplet is completely filled.
  4. Hence, it is chemically inert.
  5. Another example is neon, its atomic number is 10.
  6. Its electronic configuration is 2,8.
  7. The valence shell of neon is completely filled.
  8. So, it is chemically inert.
