3. This theory was later modified by Virchow.

Basic tenets of cell theory:

1. All living things are made up of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the structural and functional unit of all living things.
3. Cells come from pre-existing cells through the process of division.
4. All cells are the same in regard to chemical composition.
