Solution:
Iron ore is the most important mineral in the world. Iron is considered the base of the industrial development of the modern world.
Iron is widely used to make small to large machines, buildings, vehicles and weapons. It is cheap, strong and durable.
There are four types of iron ore found in India: haematite, magnetite, limonite and siderite. Magnetite is the finest iron ore with a very high iron content of up to 70%. It has excellent magnetic qualities, especially valuable in the electrical industry. Haematite ore is the most important industrial iron ore in quantity used, with 50 to 60% of iron.
Maximum iron ore is obtained from Odisha state in India. Other iron ore producers are Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Distribution
The major iron-ore belts of India are
Odisha-Jharkhand belt- in the east. (In Odisha, iron ore is found in the mines of Badampahar, Mayurbhanj, and Kendujhar Districts. And in Jharkhand, iron ore is found in mines of Gua and Noamundi in the Singbhum district.
Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur belt they just below that lies in the states of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The Bailadila range of hills in Bastar district has high-quality hematite and is exported to Japan and South Korea.
Bellari-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru belt down in the south: Kudremukh mines have large deposits of iron ore and are exported to different countries.
And Maharashtra-Goa belt:(it covers Goa entirely and the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
Production of iron ore in India
Over the years, iron ore production has seen a trend of increase.
Just a few years into the independence in the year 1951 the production was only 4 million tons. After 36 years in 1987 production increased to a staggering figure of 50 million tons. And within 10 years after that around 1997-98, the production reached 71.5 million tons.
This was all due to the policies introduced by the government in the mining industries, the production of iron ore has recorded a rapid increase in the past few years.
