Explain the characteristics of cytokinesis.

Open in App
Solution

Cytokinesis:

  1. Cytokinesis is generally defined as the division of the cytoplasm during the M phase of the cell cycle.
  2. It is the 2nd step in the M phase.
  3. This process also cannot occur without karyokinesis.
  4. It is generally the final stage of mitosis, whereby cytoplasm & other cell organelles divide between the two daughter cells.
  5. Cytokinesis also happens during the growth and repair of tissues in higher plants and animals as well as during the development of the embryo.
  6. The cell membrane constricts at the cell equator during cytokinesis, creating the cleavage furrow, which is a cleft.
  7. Whether in mitosis or meiosis, it often happens after nuclear doubling.
