Answer: A forest is a large area covered by trees and natural vegetation; including plants, shrubs, and heaps of grass. It is one of the important resources that also provides shelter to wildlife. The central and state governments have taken strict steps and classified the forest areas to protect the natural resources including wildlife.
According to the government, the forests can be classified as follows:

• Reserved Forests - Reserve forests come under the control of the government. The govt. authorities imply strict rules to protect the forest and wildlife. Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Maharashtra have large percentages of reserved forests of the total forest area.
• Protected Forests - One-third of India's total forest area is declared protected forest by the Forest Department​. They are managed by the government and are protected from further depletion. Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan have areas covered in protected forests.
• Unclassed Forests - These are not covered in reserved and protected forests. They are owned by the government, individuals, and communities. All North-eastern states and parts of Gujarat have a very high percentage of their forests as unclassed forests.
