Question

Explain the concept of single electrode potential by taking a solution of iron rod dipped in FeSO4 solution and a solution of Cu rod dipped in CuSO4 solution separately. Can we measure the potential in the above cases when they are taken separately ? Give reason.

Solution

When iron rod is dipped in FeSO4 solution, Fe atoms lose electron and a larger of negative charge surround the Cu rod and the potential developed at the interface of Cu rod and CuSO4 is called reduction potential of Cu. It is not possible to measure the potentials in the above cases when they are taken separately. This is because when the metal rod is connected to voltmeter by a metallic wire for measuring the potential, the metallic wire changes the potential of metal rod.
