Radio: Indian Broadcasting Company’ (IBC), was the first company to broadcast daily programmes through radio in India. The British Government took over it and renamed it as, ‘Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS). It was later renamed, as All India Radio (AIR). Post Independence, AIR came under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (India). It was named as ‘Akashvani’ and it broadcasted programs on entertainment, and awareness apart from special programmes for farmers, workers, the youth and women. Lately, different new channels like ‘Radio Mirchi’ are also providing radio services.
Television: Dr. Rajendra Prasad inaugurated the ‘Delhi Doordarshan Centre. On 1 May 1972, Doordarshan’s Mumbai centre began to telecast programmes. On 15th August 1982, colour television was introduced in India. In 1991 the private national and international channels were allowed to telecast in India.
