Question

Explain the division of labour at (a) organization level (b) cellular level.

Solution

Multicellular organisms:

  1. These are made up of a large number of cells.
  2. Cells are aggregated to form tissues.
  3. Every tissue is designed to perform a specific function.
  4. So, there is a division of labour among cells and tissues.

( a) At the organization level:

  1. The multicellular organisms show division of labour where different components of the body take up different functions.
  2. For example, muscular system carries out the function of locomotion and movement, nerves detect the stimuli and conduct the impulses like movements through contraction and relaxation of muscles, blood transports the nutrients and oxygen,

(b) Cellular level.

  1. In multicellular organisms, the body is made up of millions of cells that are specialized to carry out a few functions.
  2. Different types of cells are aggregated into tissues to carry out a specific function.
  3. Since these cells carry out only a particular function, they do it very efficiently.
  4. This specialization is due to differentiation; that is, cells obtain a definite shape, size, structure, and function.
  5. Thus, the division of labour among the cells makes it easier for the body to carry out its functions efficiently.
