Question

Explain the effects of temperature and pressure on the rate of diffusion.

Open in App
Solution

Intermixing of different particles of matter(solids, liquids, gases) on their own is called diffusion. Gases show the maximum rate of diffusion while solids show the least.

Effect of temperature on diffusion:

  • With the increase in temperature the interparticle spacing among the particles of liquid increases.
  • The particles gain energy to move with increased kinetic energy.
  • While moving at greater speeds they move to the areas of low concentration of particles.
  • This moving of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration is called diffusion.
  • Hence show an increase in diffusion.

Effect of pressure on diffusion:

  • When the pressure increases then the particles comes close to each other.
  • Hence the particles of the different particles of matter get mixed with much easier.
  • This intermixing of different particles of matter(solids, liquids, gases) on their own is called diffusion
  • Thus, the rate of diffusion gets increased and vice versa.
