There is a mistake in the question, in place of minerals, it should be materials.

Expansion is a phenomenon which involves the action of becoming larger or spreading out or an act of relaxation or increase or enlargement.

In expansion; a substance or nature is increased in shape, size, scope or quantity.

In science; it is used in muscular relaxation, heart relaxation, expansion or increase of volume of liquid or gaseous particles on heating. Further it is used when solids are get expanded on temperature etc.

Contraction is the decreasing of size in materials when cooled. It is when it decreases in the temperature it decreases in the substance too.

Following are the applications of expansion and contraction of materials:

1. The jammed metal lid of a jam jar can be expanded and opened by heating.
2. In many thermometers, mercury is used. When the bulb of the thermometer comes in contact with a hot object, the mercury expands and its level rises in the glass tube, indicating the temperature.
3. The electric lines are never hung tautly between poles because in outside environment wires are subjected to extreme weather conditions, ranging from acute hot to cold temperature. In winters, a taut wire on contraction can snap.
