Explain the eye infection trachoma with symptoms and causes.

Trachoma:

  1. It is an infection of the eyes which is caused by the bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis.
  2. It is a very contagious disease. It spreads when one comes into contact with an infected person's eyes, eyelids, throat, or nose secretion.

Symptoms of trachoma are:

  1. Irritation of eyes and eyelids along with mild itching.
  2. Mucus or pus discharge from the eyes.
  3. Swelling in the eyelids.
  4. Sensitivity towards the light, photophobia.
  5. Pain in the eyes.
  6. Loss of vision and redness of eyes.

Causes of trachoma:

  1. People living in crowded areas where someone is already infected can easily get this infection.
  2. Poor hygiene and sanitary conditions.
  3. Common in the age group of 4 to 6-year children.
  4. People living in areas where flies are present in large numbers are more susceptible to this infection.

Treatment:

This disease can be treated either by using antibiotics or by performing surgeries.
