Question

Explain the factors affecting the boiling point.

Open in App
Solution

Boiling point: It is defined as the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid becomes equal to atmospheric pressure and thus liquid starts changing from liquid to gas form.

Factors affecting Boiling Point are-

  • Pressure: The boiling point of the compound decreases if external pressure is less than one atmosphere and it increases if the atmospheric pressure is more than one atmosphere. If external pressure is one atmosphere boiling point will have no effect.
  • Intermolecular force: The boiling point also depends upon the intermolecular forces of the compound. If it is strong, boiling point will increase and vice versa.
