Across the period, atomic size decreases due to an increase in nuclear charge. So, the tendency to accept electrons increases and to lose electrons decreases.
Therefore, group 17 elements are strong non-metals. Whereas, group 1 elements are larger in size as compared to group 17 elements, and they readily lose their outermost electrons.
