Explain the following :
(a) Group 17 elements are strong non-metals, while group 1 elements are strong metals.

  • Across the period, atomic size decreases due to an increase in nuclear charge. So, the tendency to accept electrons increases and to lose electrons decreases.
  • Therefore, group 17 elements are strong non-metals. Whereas, group 1 elements are larger in size as compared to group 17 elements, and they readily lose their outermost electrons.
