TSH stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone also known as thyrotropin is a hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
TSH when released in the blood stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine(T4) and triiodothyronine(T3) hormones.
These hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine controls the metabolism of almost every tissue in the body.
TSH hormone is secreted throughout life but particularly reaches a high level during periods of rapid growth and development as well as in response to stress.
Deficiency or hyposecretion of TSH directly affects the secretion of thyroid hormones and hence all complications of hypothyroidism occur.
