  1. Respiration is a biochemical process of breaking down of food in the cells to release a large amount of energy and carbon dioxide.
  2. In plants, gaseous exchange mainly takes place through the stomata during respiration.
  3. Stems possess lenticels, through which gaseous exchange takes place between the internal tissues and the outer atmosphere.
  4. Oxygen diffuses into the stem through lenticels and carbon dioxide is released from the same cells.
