Question

Explain the following: Gases exert same pressure in all direction.

Open in App
Solution

  • They do not have a definite shape and volume: The molecules of gases are loosely packed.
  • Gases can flow: They can move quickly and exhibit a negligible force of attraction which doesn't allow the molecules to remain in their place.
  • As they have weak intermolecular forces of attraction because the particles are far away from each other and that is why they have large inter-molecular spaces between the molecules.
  • The random motion of their particles exerts pressure
  • Hence, the particles of a gas move in all possible directions and collide with each other and the walls of the container. Thus, they exert pressure in all directions.
