Explain the following
(ⅰ ) Dilute Nitric acid is generally considered a typical acid but not so in its reaction with metals.
(ⅱ) Concentrated Nitric acid appears yellow when it is left standing in a glass bottle.
(ⅱⅰ) All glass apparatus is used in the laboratory preparation of Nitric acid.
Nitric acid
(ⅰ ) Dilute nitric acid is considered as typical acid except for its reaction with metals, because it do not liberate Hydrogen. Its a powerful oxidising agent, and nascent oxygen formed oxidises Hydrogen in water.
(ⅱ) The pure Nitric acid is colourless concentrated Nitric acid undergoes decomposition as it give reddish brown Nitrogen dioxide gas which when dissolved in the acid appear yellow in colour.
(ⅱⅰ) The apparatus used for the laboratory preparation of Nitric acid are made of glass , because the vapour of Nitric acid are highly corrosive. They attack rubber cork, plastics etc.
So dilute Nitric acid is not considered typical acid because it do not liberate Hydrogen.
Concentrated Nitric acid appears yellow because it decomposes Nitrogen dioxide in acid.
Due to corrosive nature of Nitric acid glass apparatus are used in laboratory.
