Sedimentation:

  • It is based upon of effect of gravity in the suspension solution.
  • In suspension, the practices will settle down at the bottom and get separated.
  • The clear liquid solution is seen on top of the beaker.
  • Example: The process of sedimentation is used in water treatment plants.

Decantation:

  • Decantation is the process of separation of liquid from solid and other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by removing the liquid layer at the top from the layer of solid or liquid below.
  • It is generally used in the separation of oil and water.
