(3) Pollination

Solution

(1) Reproduction: Reproduction is the process by which new offsprings are produced from their parents. If there would be no reproduction, new organisms will not come into existence which will result in the extinction of that species. Thus, reproduction is necessary for the continuation of species and survival of organisms from generation to generation. There are two modes of reproduction - asexual and sexual.

(2) Vegetative propagation: It is the plant’s ability to reproduce asexually by producing new plants from vegetative parts such as roots, stem and leaves. The offsprings produced by vegetative propagation are exactly identical to the parent because only a single parent is involved.

Some advantages of this method are:

• Plants which are incapable of reproducing sexually can reproduce by this method.

• It is an easy, economical and quick method to produce a large number of similar plants.

• It helps in preserving the beneficial traits present in a particular population.

(3) Pollination: The process of transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma for fertilization is known as pollination. It is of two types - self pollination and cross pollination.

If the transfer of pollen takes place in the same flower or to another flower of the same plant, it is known as self pollination. If the transfer of pollen takes place from one flower to the other flower of another plant of the same species, it is known as cross-pollination. This transfer of pollen takes place through different types of agents such as wind, water, insects, birds and animals.
