In a democracy, governments are formed through elections. The exact process of government formation differs from democracy to democracy. There are two main ways that elections lead to government formation.
1. Parliamentary system: People elect members of parliament to form the legislature. The political party with the largest support in Parliament then forms the executive out of members of Parliament. This is the method followed in countries like Britain and India.
2. Presidential system: Here, elections to the legislature and executive are separate. The President is directly elected. This is the method followed in USA.
