Explain the general characteristics of the phylum Arthropoda. Give one example of following classes (i) Crustacea (ii) Myriapoda (iii) Insecta (iv) Arachnida.

Characteristics of Arthropoda:

(i) Thier body is segmented and have bilateral symmetry.

(ii) Body segments are grouped into two regions - cephalothorax (head and thorax together) and abdomen, or three regions- head, thorax and abdomen.

(iii) Exoskeleton of arthropods contains hard layer of chitin.

(iv) Respiration through general body surface, by gills, air tubes (tracheae) or book-lungs.

(v) Fertilisation is usually Internal, oviparous or ovoviviparous.

Classes and their examples:

(i) Crustacea: Prawn

(ii) Myriapoda: Centipede

(ill) Insecta: Butterfly

(iv) Arachnida: Scorpion
