Addictive substances:

  1. Those substances which tend to make a person increasingly dependent on them are called addictive substances.
  2. Tobacco is one of addictive substances which causes diseases.

Tobacco

  1. Tobacco is smoked in the form of beedi, cigarette or cigar. Some people use tobacco as snuff whereas other chew it.
  2. Tobacco contains nicotine which causes harmful effects on human beings.
    1. Smoking of tobacco increases the risk of lung cancer.
    2. Tobacco chewing leads to oral cancer.
    3. Nicotine present in the tobacco causes constriction of blood vessels. This increases the blood pressure and also increases the risk of heart attacks.
    4. Use of tobacco leads to accumulation of tar in the nose, throat and lungs which causes cough and irritation.
    5. The fumes given out by burning of tobacco contains poisonous gases like carbon monoxide which damages the health of smoker a well as non-smokers present nearby.
  3. All cigarette packets and advertisement for cigarette carries a warning “smoking is injurious to health”. We should not use tobacco in any form throughout our life.
