Question

Explain the increase in chemical reactivity of metals as we go down the group.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Metal reacts by donating the electrons from the outermost shells to form positive ions.
  2. Metal donates 1, 2 and 3 electrons to form +1, +2, and +3 ions.
  3. When we go down the group, the tendency of metal atoms to lose electrons increases due to the increasing number of subshells and size of an atom.
  4. hence, their chemical reactivity also increases.
