1) The outer layer of kidney is a tough capsule inside which kidney is divided into two zones - cortex (outer) and medulla (inner).
2) The medulla is further divided into 8-13 conical masses called as medullary pyramids. The part of cortex extending between the medullary pyramids is called as Columns of Bertini.
3) At the tip of each medullary pyramid lies a pointed aperture called as Renal papillae.
4) Space present in front of renal papillae and covered on both sides by columns of bertini is called as minor calyx, thus consist of 8-13 minor calyx, which combine to form around 2-3 major calyx which in turn, opens into renal pelvis of ureters.
