In a wastewater treatment plant, bar screen is a mechanical filter which removes physical impurities such as large solid objects, napkins, plastics, cans, etc., from water. The wastewater is allowed to pass through bar screen so that large solid objects such as rags, napkins, sticks, cans, plastic bags, polyethene, etc. present in wastewater can be removed.
It is part of the primary filtration flow and typically is the first, or preliminary, level of filtration, being installed at the influent to a wastewater treatment plant.
