Question

Explain the line "ethers are compounds formed by substituting the hydrogen atom of hydroxyl group of an alcohol or phenol by an alkyl or aryl group "

Open in App
Solution

Dear student, Ethers are a class of organic compounds that contain an ether group—an oxygen atom connected to two alkyl or aryl groups. They have the general formula R–O–R′, where R and R′ represent the alkyl or aryl groups. As the general formula of alcohol is R-OH and phenol can be represented as C6H5OH. So if the H atom of alcohol and phenol is replaced by R' which can be alkyl or aryl group the resultant compounds formed will be ethers.
