Explain how the Himalayas were formed. (2 marks)
Solution:
The himalayan mountains are located in the northern part of India and form a continuous chain- in an arch layout.
The mountains are stretched to cover a distance of 2,400 kilometres.
The width of the mountain ranges are broader in the western region with a distance of 500 km, whereas the width of the mountain ranges are narrower in the eastern region with a distance of 200 km.
The himalayan mountain range was formed a few million years ago due to the collision of two tectonic plates, namely the Eurasian plate and the Indo-Australian plate.
Due to this collision, the edges of these plates began to fold, which in turn resulted in the formation of the Himalayas.
