If an excess current passes through the electrical appliance, it gets damaged. So in order to prevent it from damage, a fuse is connected to the live wire. Thus if an excess current passes through the fuse, copper wire inside it melts and opens the circuit preventing the appliance from damage. Current rating of fuse as 5 A means that a maximum current of 5 A can be passed through it without damaging it. If a current greater than 5 A is passed through the fuse, it will melt.
