Question

Explain the mechanism of anaerobic respiration in detail giving examples of organisms in which it occurs.

Open in App
Solution

Anaerobic respiration can takes place in germinating seeds, in yeast, certain bacteria and in human muscles during vigorous exercise. The anaerobic respiration produces only two ATP molecules for each glucose molecule and carbon dioxide is released during this process.

We can study this by studying two examples:

Fermentation in Yeast:

Fermentation is the incomplete breakdown of sugar into alcohol i.e., ethanol and carbon dioxide to release energy. This process occurs mainly in yeast, which is used to produce beer, wine by brewing.

C6H12O6 (Glucose) → 2C2H5OH (ethanol) + 2CO2 + 2ATP.

Lactic acid formation in human muscles:-

During vigorous exercise when there is lack of oxygen muscles respire anaerobically to compensate for the oxygen requirement of muscle cells. During this process there is incomplete breakdown of glucose into lactic acid and energy.

C6H12O6 (Glucose) → 2C3H6O3 (lactic acid)

+ 2ATP
