Question

Explain the method by which carbon tetrachloride ,water and ethyl alcohol mixture can be separated?

Open in App
Solution

The solution is as follows:

1. The boiling points of these compounds are as follows:

Carbon tetrachloride 760C
Ethanol 780C
Water 1000C

2. As we see, there is a large difference between the boiling point of water and mixture of CC4 and ethanol, we can separate water by simple distillation.

3. Now a there is a very little difference between the boiling points of of CCl4 and ethanol are separated by fractional distillation. Or we can use separating funnel to separate them as they are not miscible with each other but distillation ensures a pure product.
