When we have to separate a magnetic substance from a mixture then we bring a magnet close to the mixture so the magnetic substance gets attracted towards a magnet and separated out from the mixture whereas the non-magnetic substance remains in the mixture. So magnetic and non-magnetic substances can be separated out in this way.
