Movement for Democracy in Nepal

  1. Nepal witnessed an extraordinary popular movement in 2006 which was aimed at restoring democracy
  2. In Nepal, the king, though, remained the head of State, the real powers are exercised by popularly elected representatives
  3. After the mysterious killing of King Birendra, King Gyanendra became the new king of Nepal who was not ready to accept democratic rule
  4. He dismissed the democratic government which resulted in launching the movement for regaining control over the government from the king
  5. This movement which started as a small one gained momentum in due course of time which gained support from people nation - wide and also from political parties
  6. As a result, parliament was restored and most of the powers of the king were taken away by it in the form of laws
